Ferdinand Bauer served as scientific illustrator on board HMS Investigator during Matthew Flinders' exploration of Australia. Robert Brown served as the expedition's naturalist, and when the pair returned to England in 1805, they had collected thousands of plant specimens and Bauer had produced hundreds of . Bauer decided to publish his sketches under ...the title "Illustrationes florae Novae Hollandiae," with Brown providing a brief preface and captions. Three issues of the work were published in 1813, consisting of 15 plates. Financial restrictions and a lack of adequate engravers resulted in the publication being abandoned after the third issuing, and as a result, this is a very rare work (http://ow.ly/4nfDpb).

The copy in BHL, which includes two colored and the rest uncolored plates, was digitized for BHL from the State Botanical Collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. The copy in BHL is also bound with works by John Martyn, C.H. Bellenden Ker and L.I. Duperrey.
